About Target Ovarian Cancer

Philippa Carr, Kate Kirkland, Joanna Barker, Frances Reid and Annwen Jones - Trustees and Executive Staff of Target Ovarian Cancer

Target Ovarian Cancer is dedicated to achieving a long and good life for every woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United Kingdom, and working to improve diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Our challenge

Ovarian cancer in the United Kingdom today is characterised by

  • Low survival The UK has one of the worst survival rates in Europe
  • Low awareness Lack of understanding results in delays in diagnosis
  • Chronic underfunding Investment is miniscule compared with other cancers
  • Fragmentation A piecemeal approach to research and patient care
  • No national platform There is no research grant programmes, survivorship or advocacy programmes that are run on a national basis

Our opportunity

Latest data confirm the United Kingdom as having one of the worst survival rates in Europe for ovarian cancer.  New approaches are urgently needed to give women across the UK, the same prospects as elsewhere in Europe.

The new National Cancer Plan puts a clear emphasis on early diagnosis and quality of life. Both of these are critical to women with ovarian cancer. With that aim clearly in mind we are participating in the work of the National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative, and cooperating with the Department of Health.

A new generation of research scientists and specialist clinicians throughout the UK are willing and able to expand their work in developing new treatments for ovarian cancer if they can gain access to sufficient investment.

Our purpose

Target Ovarian Cancer will be bringing substantial new funds to help accelerate progress in terms of survival and quality of life.  We will work in areas of clearly identified need, within the broad themes of research, education and advocacy.

As an organisation we are committed to being

  • Nationally representative - in all we do
  • Collaborative - acting as a catalyst to bring together all those working in the field throughout the UK
  • Businesslike - the founders of Target Ovarian Cancer have a background in business and finance, and aim to combine the principles of sound business management with best practices in healthcare and medical research.
